Celebrating & Reflecting on Juneteenth and Pride Month

A message from Martindale-Avvo’s SVP & Group General Manager, Suke Jawanda:

June is a big month for celebrating civil rights! This weekend marks 157 years since the last group of enslaved African Americans were notified of their freedom in Texas. It is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in our country. And Pride Month has its roots in the June 1969 Stonewall Riots, a movement led by courageous activists from the LGBTQIA+ community.

We’ve come a long way as a country over the past 150+ and 50+ years respectively. Every person has the right to be themselves. Freely, safely and without fear. We all have a right to pride and truly celebrate our diversity.

Sometimes though, that’s not the case… at least not yet. Hundreds of thousands of people from across the country have come to us, counted on us and have been helped by us when they needed it.  Specifically, across Avvo.com, Lawyers.com and Martindale.com, over 1.8 million people have come to our attorney profile pages, directory pages, and content pages from June 2021 through May 2022.

These are more than numbers. Behind these numbers are people — sometimes at the most vulnerable point in their lives — turning to Avvo.com, Lawyers.com, and Martindale.com for help. Furthermore, behind these numbers are attorneys who believe civic good and business good can both be achieved when serving their communities.

Thank you for being you. Thank you for making a difference by the very nature of the work you do everyday to help make justice for all a reality every single day.

Happy Juneteenth and Pride Month!
